Chapter 25

They found Maximus working at a computer in Steel’s office. After sitting down, Slate kept Dakota’s hand in his, sensing his mate was concerned about Maximus’ response, but he had no such worries.

When Slate’s father finished typing, he looked up at both of them with a smile. “Congratulations on your mating. And welcome to the family, Dakota. My son couldn’t have been given a finer mate than you and anything I can do for you, please let me know.”

“Thank you,” said Dakota.

“Good. Now boys, tell me, what’s up?”

Giving Dakota a quick glance before returning his father’s greeting, Slate said, “I wanted to get your opinion on something first before bringing it up at a board meeting.”

“Oh? So it concerns Dire Enterprises?”

“Yeah, it does, well at least my role in the company.”

“Okay, so you want to stop traveling as much, now that you have a mate.”

Slate began to chuckle, “Dad, you’re something else. How did you figure it out? Oh shit, I bet Mom told you.”

“No, not exactly, but she did tell me it was time to hire personal assistants for you and Steel. I’ve already discussed this with your brother and he’s all for it. I also suggested that Carson could take over the grant side of things if you feel he’s ready. I’ve been very impressed with his work and right now we aren’t using his full potential.”

“True,” agreed Slate. “He’s perfect for our grant division and it won’t take me long to show him the ropes. So that leaves finding a PA for you, Steel and me.”

“I asked your brother for a list of names from which we can choose and I need the same from you. Keep in mind, they have to be willing to move here.”

“Are you thinking of setting up a formal office here?”

“Yes. With all of us here now on a permanent basis, it’s the only thing that makes sense.”

“Will it be here in the pack house or somewhere else?”

“Steel is looking into it, so for now, I can’t say.”

Nodding, Slate said, “Regarding who we might promote from headquarters, it’s simple…no one. Everyone who’s qualified to be my PA won’t take the job because they all have families and won’t want to travel. What I need is someone who’s single and doesn’t mind living in remote locations for several months at a time.”

“Good point. So at least for you and me, we’ll have to hire someone new.”

“I bet we’ll have to hire outside for Steel, too.”

“Likely,” Maximus said, “Hopefully we can find the right people quickly. In the meantime, what’s on your agenda for the near future?”

“Finishing up in Tajikistan, but the legal people I have there will be able to do that for me. I have a couple of months before the next trip is scheduled so I’m hoping to have someone onboard by then.”

“I think that’s possible. I’ll be meeting with Steel this afternoon and if possible, please try to join us.”

Looking at Dakota, Slate said, “I’ll try, but we need to speak with Mom and I was hoping she’d be free this afternoon.
